Maybe you’re terrified of group fitness classes. You don’t want to look stupid, or you feel intimidated that, as a beginner, you will stick out.

I getcha.

Boy oh boy, do I getcha.

Feeling exposed can really suck.

It’s what kept me from doing anything that involved people looking at just me. I used to make myself utterly sick when I had to do a solo in band. Like, go to the nurse’s office sick.

One of my papers was published in a WSC journal, and I gave myself a gallbladder attack so I wouldn’t have to read it in front of people. No, really. I made myself sick. I thought it was GERD at the time, but I was soooo wound up about standing in front of a microphone (and talking into it) that I created an incredibly painful situation in my body.

So, I get it.

Even when it comes to yoga!

Halfway through Yoga training, it was time to schedule our practice teaching sessions. We each set up a 20 minute session to teach our cohorts. And i. was. terrified.

I wanted to go very last; I was wringing my hands, fussing, and generally working myself into a tizzy.

Finally one of my mentors just grabbed a pen and said: “Holly, just get on the damn schedule. Pick a time, and get it over with.” and then looked at me with one eyebrow raised, pen hovering over the paper.

I set up my teaching time.

And you know what? I made it through.

It was hard, but I came out of that session with a massive realization. I decided right then and there that, while I enjoy working with a group (and it turned out that I’m really good at it, after all), that personal Yoga was definitely going to be something I offered for people like me. People who don’t want to feel alone in a room full of people.

People who are curious about Yoga, but aren’t entirely sure where to start.

People who crave the 1on1 attention that we just can’t get from a group class.
