Healthy & Homemade Whole food %22Hotdogs%22 title

Fair Warning: I cringed a bit at that ‘Healthy’. I try my dangdest to focus on eating whole foods, but I’m not here to judge our food choices.

If you don’t want to eat the things that are in commercially made hot dogs, but love that savory flavor, I have something for you. They’re super easy to make, and vegetarian.

Now, don’t freak out at that last bit. Even my hardcore carnivore friends ask me to bring em to barbecues. And the pickiest of eaters love them. So I’ll let you in on the recipe.

Presenting: Carrot Dawgs.

I knoooooowwwww.

Carrots.

I wasn’t convinced at first either. When you want a hotdog…but refuse to eat hotdogs…ya get a little adventurous.

Pinterest lead me to this blog post which I tweaked to my liking. Experiment after experiment lead to what I think is the perfect recipe for carrot dawgs. Give it a go, and then make it your own!

Ingredients:

1+lb Carrots, the fatter the better.

Marinade:

1/2 c Water
1/2 c Vinegar
1/4 c Soy Sauce or Liquid Aminos
1-3 dashes Liquid Smoke
2 cloves Garlic, chopped
2 T oil (I use avocado oil)
Franks Hot Sauce to taste
Worchestershire to taste (if you’re vegetarian, make sure it is too)
Pepper to taste

Buns (if you want em)

Your favorite toppings: We like good old fashioned mustard, ketchup, kraut and pickle relish, but get creative!

You’ll need:

Stove and/or Grill
Pot for boiling carrots
Airtight container for marinade (you want to be able to shake it without making a mess)
Grilling Utensils

Here’s whatcha do:

Boil some water. While it’s coming to boil, clean and trim carrots, and mix all the marinade ingredients in the airtight container.

When the water gets to a boil, turn heat down to medium and add carrots. Cook until you can just pierce with a fork. Don’t let em get mushy!

Run cold water over the carrots to stop cooking. Add them to your marinade, and let sit for at least 3 hours. I’ve let mine sit for a week, they got a little vinegary, but were still delicious!

To serve: Fire up the grill or broil em in the oven. You’re essential reheating them and giving a good char, if that floats yer boat.

Toss on your favorite toppings and enjoy!
