part 2 in a series on Yoga misconceptions. Β Check out part 1!

Full disclosure here. I’m totally a natural-dyed-in-the-humane-certified-wool-hippie. I hug trees, I run around barefoot, I believe we all have innate goodness in us, I use the word ground in relation to energy, as well as the words unfurl, fairtrade, and of course organic. I grow my own food. Plus, I’m vegetarian.

In Nebraska.

And I’ve been called plenty of other things too, but I like hippie. I like what it means to me.

But you really don’t have to be a hippie to try yoga.

Because it doesn’t have to be about any of that. It doesn’t have to be about your third eye, about mystical energy, or the Universe. About loving the earth or about spirituality.

Yeah, I’m a spiritual gal. But you don’t have to be to get oodles of goodness outta my classes.

I’ve always said, if I say something that doesn’t ring true to you, that doesn’t feel right in your mind or your heart…just let it go. In one ear and out the other. I admit, this might be a fairly hippie concept in itself, but I PROMISE you, it will get you through life with better blood pressure numbers.

Instead, you focus on the things that ring true. Notice what you feel in the body. Notice how the weight travels in each pose, notice the breath moving, notice what muscles are doing to help you stay in each pose. Notice the sensations. What does lengthening here feel like? What does softening there feel like?

And in relaxation pose, what does it feel like to let go, and just be for a little while?

Relaxation Pose: Where you get to rest at the end of every class.

You don’t have to fit into any label to try yoga. It helps to be curious, but honestly, that’s about it. You just need to show up. Give it a go. Breathe. Just be, for a little while.

Β I can’t wait to just be, with you, and soon. Β
